The importance of the Mindo area
Mindo is internationally known as a premier area for birdwatching. Birdlife International declared Mindo an Important Bird Area (IBA), the first declaration in South America due to its outstanding variety of birds. Mindo regularly features in the top spot in annual worldwide birdcount competitions. Mindo is part of the Choco region, considered to have "one of the richest biota in the world, with an exceptional quantity of species and a high level of endemism in plants, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies and birds" (Stattersfield et al. 1998).
Description
The Rio Bravo Biological Station's goals are to facilitate biological research, volunteer and education projects and visitors who may have a keen interest in activities such as exploring the forest wildlife and birdwatching. It is dedicated to the conservation of endangered species and habitats in and between the Upper Choco Valley and Northwestern Andean Cloud Forest of Ecuador 10km from Mindo. The biological station provides low-cost support for scientists, volunteers and students researching the Choco and Andean Forest plant and animal communities.
General Information
Mindo es internacionalmente conocida como la primera área de observación y conservación de aves en Sudamérica. Así lo declaró Birdlife International (IBA) en el año 2000, el 2006 - 07 -0 8 y 09, ha ganado en forma consecutiva el Conteo de Aves a nivel mundial. Mindo es "es una de las zonas más ricas en biodiversidad en el mundo, con una excepcional cantidad de especies y un alto nivel de endemismo en plantas, reptiles, anfibios, mariposas y aves." (Stattersfield et al. 1998)
